Holocaust Memorial Day 2018

27th January is the day for everyone to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution and in the subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. On Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) we honour the survivors of these regimes and challenge ourselves to use the lessons of their experiences to inform our lives today.

27th January marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. On HMD you will be joining thousands of others who come together at activities all over the UK to remember the past and consider the part they play in challenging hatred and creating a safer, better future.

There will be local events to mark HMD 2018. We will provide information as soon as details come to us. In the meantime, please make a note in your diaries and join us in reflecting on the millions who were so cruelly taken. We have a supply of HMD 2018 leaflets, badges and stickers in the UNISON Office. Please call 0161 720 2149 and will be happy to send you supplies.

The theme of HMD 2018 is "The Power of Words".

“I want to go on living even after my death! And that’s why I am so grateful to God for having given me this gift, which I can use to develop myself and to express all that’s inside me. When I write I can shake off all my cares; my sorrow disappears, my spirits are revived!”

Anne Frank, written in her diary, 5 April 1944
