UNISON Achieves Landmark Agreement for Care Staff

Unison’s social care campaign has successfully negotiated a landmark agreement for big pay rises for thousands of low paid care staff working for the Methodist Homes for the Aged (MHA).

MHA is one of the UK’s biggest care home providers, employing over 800 care home staff in the North West and over 6,500 staff nationwide.

In the landmark agreement MHA has agreed to pay all its staff at least the Real Living Wage from April 2018, with care staff to be paid £9 per hour, senior care staff to be paid £10.05 per hour, and cleaners/catering staff £8.75 per hour.

The Real Living Wage (£8.75per hour) is defined as the minimum hourly wage necessary to meet basic needs. It is not to be confused with the Tories “National Living Wage” which is a lower amount for workers over 25 years of age, and a fraction for those younger. This agreement means that MHA will be the first of the big care providers to pay the Real Living Wage.

UNISON will now be urging MHA to seek formal accreditation as a living wage employer.
