28th April 2021 International Workers Memorial Day

Each year on 28th April we commemorate International Workers Memorial Day. A time to remember those who have lost their lives at (or through) work, and where we seek to ensure that steps are taken today to make our workplaces as safe as possible. However, it is a sad reality that today, as you read this message, families around the world will see loved ones set off for work today who not be coming home again.

Never has this day been more poignant, or important than it is this year. Over the past 14 months we have seen with our own eye’s an occupational health crisis across the world, with front-line health & care workers fighting a global pandemic without adequate protective equipment. Locally we have sadly lost members because of Covid-19. These have been heart breaking times.

“Remember the Dead. Fight for the Living”. This is our annual call on International Workers Memorial Day. Today we are uniquely placed. We are emerging, slowly, from a once in a lifetime event that we cannot ignore and just pick up where we left things last March. We owe it to ourselves and our families to bring health and safety in our working lives to the top of the agenda.

You can help achieve this by becoming a UNISON Health & Safety Representative in your workplace. We provide the comprehensive training and support, and employers have a legal obligation to provide paid time off whilst you train.

If you are interested in becoming a workplace Health & Safety Representative for your union and colleagues then get in touch by emailing us at [email protected] or by giving us a call during office hours on 07375 88 14 38.
